Javelina
The Javelina is the only wild pig in North America. It looks a lot like a regular pig except that it has blackish gray fur and is a little bit bigger. Javelinas have beady eyes, small round ears, short legs, and three toes on each hoof. The ruff of hair around its neck is called the "collared peccary." |
In the desert, most Javelinas live in the canyon area where there are more water holes. They like the bushy terrain because it carries the most food for them and provides them with shade from the hot sun. Javelinas tend to eat berries, cacti, grass, bulbs, flowers, and fruit that are easy for them to get. They have a very good sense of smell which allows them to find food easily and sense if predators are near. |
